Doug:
That's exactly my experience in vintage (and a lot of guys at our VRG events are SVRA racers). Lot of good camaraderie.
It's all about having a good dice with some of your friends. It's nice to win, but it's only for fun anyway, so no big deal.
Earlier in the year, I found myself circulating at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. I was about 200 yards ahead of a pack of four cars. Lap after lap I circulated alone while this pack of four back in my mirrors were swapping leads over and over and having a great time.
So I slowed down *just a little* so they could catch me. Actually, I misjudged and they all sailed ahead of me in no time!
I re-passed three of them in one of the most fun sessions I've ever had.
Only the Ferrari stayed ahead of me, but he eventually spun.
I know lots of other vintage racers intentionally cluster up to have a good dice, especially during practice sessions. Makes for some good bench racing afterwards.
~HERE~ is a picture Lin took of that session (there was a Midget right behind me).
