I access Usenet. I frequent <GASP!> NEWSGROUPS. One in particular is named: alt.autos.alfa-romeo. Another is alt.comp.linux... I have Verizon FiOS as my access. In a bold move to quash the menace of kiddy-porn the AG of New York has managed to cajole all three of the "Big Providers" to drop close to 99% of Usenet's groups, to include the ENTIRE alt.* hierarchy. Verizon has done this "voluntarily" according to THEM. Their choice, I know. Since my access to these newsgroups and other alt.os.* and alt.comp.* ones constitutes about a third of what I use the 'net for, I consider this a breach of contract. MY choice is I want my access fee cut by a third or I want OUT of the two year agreement with no "cancellation penalty" fee. I'll find a better provider for my access, drop the land-line phone and "suffer" thru whatever broadcast TeeVee I can scrounge from the atmosphere.

The whole of TV/radio/telephone is in such a state of flux that it's nearly impossible to keep up with it. Who knows where it's going to end...?

Wait until the ISPs start blocking all the common usenet ports too.

After suffering tons of poor retention problems (even for text groups), lousy speeds, poor access overall, etc...I started paying for usenet access a long time ago. Yeah, I know, it's another bill to pay - but for text-only stuff there are a lot of services that are pretty cheap and offer far better access than most of the ISPs.

Well,there goes alt.tv.dinosaurs.die.barney.die...

And alt.base.jumping.sheep.bounce.bounce.bounce!!!

That's why I love this place, Boss. All a matter of perspective. :smirk:

Not to mention: alt.bunched.panties

See, now that actually sounds a bit like a dirty website or usenet group.

I take it you got a dish/phone/net package, right doc? Is there another provider in your area other than Verizon (I'm not at work so I forget offhand who the providers are)? Round here I could get Comcast or AT&T (who do dish, not cable), both of whom do packages of all three services. The phone company does DSL, however, and some people hate DSL. Personally I've never noticed the supposed speed difference, but I don't do online games anymore, or any other high bandwidth stuff.

Yeah, phone, 'net & tv... all-of-a-piece. The "Big3" providers have ALL bowed to this lunacy. Comcast supposedly dropped ALL news server access.
