Sleight-of-hand magicians are fun to watch and Gertner is amazing. But playing card manipulators fascinate me. They're called "mechanics" in professional parlance. I aspired in my youth to emulate them, with some limited success. Shin Lim has elevated the art to a point where he must be considered a Master Mechanic!

When I was a kid I had three completely sealed and EMPTY red cups. I would tell the person “one cup has a ball inside “.
I would pickup the first one and shake it and no sound was heard (remember, it’s empty). I did the same with the second one; again no sound. When I picked up the third one and shook it you could hear a ball rattling around inside (yes it was EMPTY). Once the person knew which cup the ball was in I would randomly move them on the table and ask “which cup had the ball inside?”
Of course they got it wrong... I would pickup one of the other cups and shake it and you could hear the ball rattling around!
How was it done? Simple, the kit came with a “capsule” that contained a steel ball. The capsule was placed under my watch band. Whenever I wanted to make them think “this cup” had the ball I always used my left hand where I wore my watch. Drove people crazy.

I would save up my change from collecting bottles along the beach and spend it on stuff in a small catalog from "Top Hat Magic Company" someplace in Illinois. Some of it was clever stuff, others were too cheezy to use. One of the clever ones was a rig that allowed you to take a dime from someone after they'd put an identifying mark on it, thank them for the dime as you put it in a pocket. Then hand them a small box bound up with four rubber bands holding it shut. Asking them to unwrap it, a matchbox was Inside that and inside the matchbox was a small red bag held closed with another small rubber band. Opening the bag revealed the very dime they'd handed over earlier. That one confounded a lot of folks.
