This can't be right

I'm assembling my 1500 today and went to line up the timing marks. I alway check lobe location just to be sure and often make my own marks depending. If you line it up like they say, it's on #1 TDC EXHAST stroke, not compression. While it'll still work fine, it amazes me why they would do the opposite of evey other manufacturer in the world.

I'm an American and I "do" TCD #1 compression. It makes things a whole lot easier.

No, it shouldn't as they want you to start on "#1" valve, which is partially open due to split overlap as it's on the exhast stroke. There is no reason to do it in the order they give. ANY four stroke engine in the world can have it's valves adjusted as long as it's @ TDC on the compression stroke.

(This may not be true of Ducatti, so let's say 99%.)

That's another thing squirrely about these. it should be: TDC comp # "X" cylinder, set BOTH int and ex and go to the next TDC comp stroke of the next cylinder in the firing order. There is no reason to jump around they way they want you to. I would expect this with something complicated like I Ducatti, but not this engine.

They must be setting valve timing for #4 TDC comp, which doesn't make any sense. I keep thinking I'm setting it up wrong, but it's EXACTLY as specified.

When I rebuilt my 1147 engine I had several manuals for reference. One (I don't recall the publisher but it was green) was completely the opposite of the others (Haynes, Bentley and Autopress).

This is the BL Midget 1500 Workshop Manual and it is green. I'm just gonna do my own thing lesst I forget it's different in the future.

Just checked and you're right, this stupid thing is backwards from my Chilton's.

I think the "different" one was a Clymer. Don't think I have a Chiltons. I'll check at home tonght.

Don't understand where there is a problem.
When #1 is at TDC the engine can either be at the end of the exhaust stroke or at the end of the compression stroke. After the timing chain is installed if you want it on the compression stroke and it is at the exhaust stroke just rotate the crank 360 degrees.

BL is the one that's "wrong".

Tom, the problem is, if you don't realize that and set the dizzy in on #1 and set the valves, it won't run. Sure you can rotate it around, but it should be set up correctly instead.
