This came up on my you tube thing as I was looking for something else. It is an interesting story. I did not realize that some Bugatti engines seeme to have the head machined in with the block. At that seems to be what they have going on as they assemble the engine.

This guy has a lot of videos. There is one of him blasting down British country roads in a Lotus 7.

Many, if not most, early engines have the head and block cast as one piece, or head and cylinder as one piece. Maybe they hadn't figured out head gaskets yet.
 
Offy's had single piece block/heads with bolt-on crankcases too. Turbo'ed the heck out of 'em without ever having to worry about blowing a head gasket. 1000hp out of 160 cubic inches, not too shaby. They were competitive up through the 70's.

I have fond memories of visiting the Meyers-Drake shop and seeing dozens of those blocks lined up waiting for machining.
