Can anybody tell me?
I have read that a wire wheel rear axel is narrower than a steel wheel car. You can put a wire wheel axel in a steel wheel housing. But what happins if you put a steel wheel axel in a wirewheel housing?

I am having some trouble with the drums contacting the backing plates on my car.

I am just worndering if this car has a wirewheel rear end in it.

My car seem to have been assembled from at least two differant cars.

The steel wheel axle housing measures 41-3/4” from inside of brake backing plate flange to inside of opposite flange. The wire wheel hosing is 1” narrower at 40-3/4”. I have never tried putting steel wheel axles in a wire wheel housing, but I would think there would be interference issues in the differential. Is it possible that the backing plates are simply bent in?
 
Thank you. I see that this is not my problem.
Doing a complete rebuild on the brake system this winter. I am going to have to look at the rear brakes very carefully.

When I was looking for a set for my Bugeye, I think there is a spacer that goes on between the drum and wheel. I think Vic Brit has them. I don't think there is a need to change axels doing this mod, at least on my car. Can't speak about newer cars.
 
To use steel wheel hubs on wire wheel housings. I cut 1/2" off the ends of the axle splines. makes a bit more room in the wheel well. Also helps the handling in certain cases too.
