Third Brake Light

Aloha All,

I've been thinking of adding a third brake light to my TR3 as an improvement to my safety. I drive with the hood down most of the time and the tonneau cover in place. I would like to get something to either permanently mount on the trunk lid or rear deck saddle behind the gas cap. A light that has a cover that would be painted to match the car. There was a previous post of a similar installation on an Austin Healey as I recall, but I can seem to find it.

Has any one done this or know of a source for third brake lights?

there are magnetic ones too - that way you can shove it in the trunk for a 'stock' look.

...or you could install a TR2 brake/ number plate light and that would be very discreet

I moulded a high third brake light into my roll bar (along with a triplex glass rear wind deflector). Works very well.

I shaped the light housing from 22-gauge steel, welded it to the roll bar and Bondo-ed the housing. The wire runs through the roll bar and ties into the rear harness.

With the hood down, the brake light gives the car an almost Batman-esque feel. Just a big kid.....

Also, I got the brake light from a NAPA dealer, it draws negligeable amps and really lights up the back of the car upon braking. As low and dull as my stock brake lights are (even more so on the TR3), a buddy commented how immediately his attention was drawn to my car whilst I braked. That is a good thing.

Thanks guys for the information. I think one of the JC Whitney lights will work. As Bill mentioned, I'm trying help my fellow traveler on the highway notice me and that I'm braking.

Greetings & Salutations my friends.My 1500 Spitfire is now highly lit-up in the gloom of Lucas darkness,on my rear boot luggage rack.Didn't cost much found a nice 3"round boat running light at a garagesale.Brought it home restored it to body color(white)Wen't to the local boat dealership found the chrome mounting bracket,connected to the brake light(red)wire and BINGO.You can see-it in the photos at

Looks like you already have it covered. I used a light very similar to this one:

Removed the pedestal & mounted it to the body. Painted body color. Very low profile & unobtrusive, but very bright.

I'm using 1/2 of a set of magnetic towing lights from Wally-Mart (with the other half on the TR4). Butt-ugly to be sure but take them off for club drives, shows, etc. I use a cloth-lined pad under the magnetic to avoid scratching and re-wired with suitable color wire & bullet connectors.

Another trick on the TR3A is to replace the turn signal socket unit with a pair from the front of a TR3A -- this allows a dual filament bulb in the rear turn signals and you can then wire the second filament to the brake lights giving you 2 more brake lights across the back.
