Thinking of getting a Triumph

As always, some really good advice above from folks who really know their stuff.

My only advice: buy one that's nicely sorted. Be very patient and get the one that's just right. The theory behind this is, get one that some other poor bugger has poured waaaay too much money into and can't sell the car for what he has in it. Cruel, and sad, but there are cars out there like this.

Pay your dues, do your homework. Join a local LBC club; study the market, get a nice example with no rust and nicely restored.

MUCH cheaper in the long run. :yesnod:

Aw, geez, Doug...
And here I was, just about to try and charm him with the obvious attractions of the TR3...

I agree that the first choice is convertible versus non-convertible and what kind of driving experience you want and you should see how you feel after driving both. For us the fun and enjoyment is driving with the top down so we would always vote for the convertible even though the GT6 is a great car and who can't appreciate a 6-cylinder engine in a small car. But tooling around with the top down isn't necessarily about the power, so we enjoyed driving my wife's Spitfire as much as driving my TR4A.

If after driving both you feel you want both a convertible and more power than the Spitfire has then keep an eye out for a late model TR6 or TR7 (or a TR8!) in good condition. Definitely, try to check out a local Triumph/British car club and talk to other car owners as well.

Sounds good, this will be a nice weather non-daily driver from June to October in Wisconsin. The TR7 I am not sure on. Have to try one on. So different from the others....
