MGB-GT Thinking of Buying a '67 MGBGT

Hello there,

Just wanted to ask what the general consensus is on MGBGT's. I've found a pretty clean one that is going for the right price as far as I'm concerned. But, I'd like to know what to look for in greater detail as I have never owned a LBC before. In general classic car terms its pretty clean, has lots of service records, doesn't 'seem' to be falling apart, rust-free body as far as I could tell (are there hidden spots I should look for?), engine starts up and runs but it probably needs a tune-up.

I'm thinking of using this car as a daily driver. So, if there are any sort of heads-up tips you guys can give me that would be really helpful.

Oh yeah...the lady is asking $1800 for the car. Good/bad?

Thanks,
Joel

I can`t say for the US but here in Canada a B (GT or Roadster) at 1800$ is usually a graveyard candidate, a good parts car, or a deep pocket project!

Sorry.

If it's solid for $1800 then jump on it! I drive a '67 BGT as a daily driver. Other than being a bit underpowered it's a great car.

Check the sills for rust damage. Take a screwdriver and jab at the underside of the sills. If it dents or goes through, walk away. Replacing sills is very expensive unless you're an accomplished welder / bodyman. Other than that check the usual places, wheel wells, doglegs, etc for rust. Run a magnet around the normal places to check for bondo. If it's a fresh paint job then check even more carefully! Also look under the carpet beneath the spare tire. Rust can spread here, too. Good luck!

Like Steve said, check for rust. It's the killer! If it's solid, $1800 is very fair!

Hi all,

Yeah I want to check the car more thoroughly for rust. Other than that it seems pretty clean...rough...but clean.

So the BGT is a bit underpowered? Any common cures for that?

It all depends on how much money you're willing to pump into it. A hotter cam and better air filters will add 10HP. Peco exhaust may add a few more.

If the engine is in good order you can put a supercharger on it in a weekend with hand tools. Cost is around $3K. Head work makes a huge difference but is also a bit expensive.

Or you can simply enjoy the car how it came from the factory as I do. Just plan well ahead when you want to pass on the highway! A stock MGB GT will travel at well over 100MPH, it just takes a bit longer to get there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Heck, I think that any 67 BGT that runs and doesn't look like a POS with rust is worth $1800 on even a bad day!!!

$1800 sounds like a fair deal to me, assuming rust isn't a problem that is.

Well, I go to look at it again this Saturday, so I'll let you guys know how it all goes.

Steve - I have no problems enjoying a stock BGT...just like to know what kind of toys I can get for a BGT...and then have fun explaining to my Wife why the car absolutely needs that part.

thanks,
Joel
