....chaps my hide! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif
So my Dell laptop’s A/C adapter/charger goes belly up. Talked to my company’s IT help desk who suggested I get a new one directly from Dell or go out and find a universal adaptor.
So as my laptops battery starts to slowly die on me I pay a visit to Dells web page to see if there is a local “Dell” Store. Well there is but they don’t sell the adaptors but where willing to order one for me. Rats!
Pressing on I looked to how long it’d take to order one directly from Dell’s website. While they carried them in stock and would ship overnight – the actual shipping date isn’t until the Sept. 5th (next Wednesday). Uggg!
Battery is now down to 10%. Clock is ticking!
I start searching for a “universal” adaptor. A quick search revealed that Targus makes one and they sell’em down at the local Staples & Office Depot. Shutting my laptop down – I dash over to pick one up. Good news they had one in stock! Whoo hooo!
Feeling lucky & like I’d just won the lottery, I rush home to hook up the laptop to the adaptor and fire it up.
Whats this? A note appears on the monitor that warns me that my computer doesn’t recognize the “unknown” adaptor! What the!
The note reads that “Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adaptor or higher for best system operation”
Sure enough - the laptop will run on the adaptor but the battery will not charge. Currently sitting at 7% after an hour on the a/c adaptor without a change.
A visit to Targus’s support website – there is a clear note that reads
”Your adapter is operating as it was designed. Dell specifications require that third party adapters do not charge the batteries
That’s pretty sneaky of those boys over at Dell and will have to think twice about throwing them any of my business the next time I’m in the market for a computer or any accessories.
But for now I’ve (albeit reluctantly) ordered a replacement and should have it by the end of this week. As for the so called universal adaptor – it’s going to be returned after the Dell adaptor/charger arrives.
