So my Dell laptop’s A/C adapter/charger goes belly up. Talked to my company’s IT help desk who suggested I get a new one directly from Dell or go out and find a universal adaptor.

So as my laptops battery starts to slowly die on me I pay a visit to Dells web page to see if there is a local “Dell” Store. Well there is but they don’t sell the adaptors but where willing to order one for me. Rats!

Pressing on I looked to how long it’d take to order one directly from Dell’s website. While they carried them in stock and would ship overnight – the actual shipping date isn’t until the Sept. 5th (next Wednesday). Uggg!

Battery is now down to 10%. Clock is ticking!

I start searching for a “universal” adaptor. A quick search revealed that Targus makes one and they sell’em down at the local Staples & Office Depot. Shutting my laptop down – I dash over to pick one up. Good news they had one in stock! Whoo hooo!

Feeling lucky & like I’d just won the lottery, I rush home to hook up the laptop to the adaptor and fire it up.

Whats this? A note appears on the monitor that warns me that my computer doesn’t recognize the “unknown” adaptor! What the!

The note reads that “Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adaptor or higher for best system operation”

Sure enough - the laptop will run on the adaptor but the battery will not charge. Currently sitting at 7% after an hour on the a/c adaptor without a change.

A visit to Targus’s support website – there is a clear note that reads
”Your adapter is operating as it was designed. Dell specifications require that third party adapters do not charge the batteries

That’s pretty sneaky of those boys over at Dell and will have to think twice about throwing them any of my business the next time I’m in the market for a computer or any accessories.

But for now I’ve (albeit reluctantly) ordered a replacement and should have it by the end of this week. As for the so called universal adaptor – it’s going to be returned after the Dell adaptor/charger arrives.

Sounds like a liability move to me. Didn't they have some exploding batteries not long ago? It also sounds kind of stupid because I would imagine the overcharge circuitry is in the laptop, not the charger - so what difference does it make.

I tend to try to find equipment that isn't quite so proprietary. Regular old round plug on all my laptops, including my old dells.

The smoking batteries issue was a problem with the batteries themselves over heating & damaging the internals of the laptop - not really exploding.

But my previous Dell laptop was a D600 and it had it's battery recalled and I did notice it was quite hot. But afterwards it wasn't as "warm" when it was replaced.

Still it just seems kind of lame of them and if that was the reason for doing this - it seems kind of like an excuse to make more money, than something done out of any true concern for it's customers.

All my dells are OLD now. I think my newest one is a <1ghz something or other, not even a pure pentium chip. It wasn't too bad, even the HD adapter was available without Dell. That darned computer fell apart though. I ended up laminating aluminum skins across the monitor lid, and made new hinge casings from JB weld. The new hinge casing and aluminum were all glued together with JB weld, then I sanded the case down, painted it black, and put racing stickers all over it. hehe

NO Dell`s, Compaq`s, H.P.`s Gateway`s or any other proprietory
P.O.S.`s In my arena of P.C.`s, I can`t justify a laptop for myself so I don`t have one. {I don`t much like them anyway} Too small {Physicaly} for me and my fat crippled fingers to manipulate anyway! Both sons have H.P.`s and YEP they both have ran into the same issues with the H.P. laptops.
Me and my redneck engeneering skills have, lets just say ADAPTED both machines to accept a number of different, Lets just call them addons. *SMILE*

This 'lil Toshiba Tecra has been great. I bought it purely for the size, but everything has been well made, simple, nothing weird that I can find...except the memory is a pain to get to, but that isn't a big deal.

Poor Dell. I have two, but my last - and my next desktop will be made by me!

aerog, just got a new dell comp about 2-21/2 weeks ago. got a wireless mouse whos transmitter needed an adaptor to plug into the new computer go figure, i went to best buy they had them for $29.00 - $42.00 went right across the street to radio shack $14.00 if dell knew what they where selling why didnt they include the adaptor or realize id need one and let me know? why did i need the inconvenience of having to take the time to find one and have to pay extra? why didnt i call dell and ask them for one? because i didnt again want to hear a salesman try to sell me anything more then i wanted or needed and have the order again be incomplete. a month ago a young fella that works for me ordered a dell computer he used his girlfriends credit card but his name and address for delivery much to his surprise they delivered two new computers one to him and one to her, i told him perhaps he should contact them and make arrangements to send one back he kinda gave me the same look my cat gives me when i try to teach him algebra, as far as dell is concerned im beginning to change my mind here about whats right and whats wrong. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Yep...Had a similar thing happen just a few days ago...
Seems Sanyo does not make a battery any more for my one year old (and very $$$) cell phone.
The Sprint guy just shrugged it off and said that I could get a free no frills phone for another 2 year contract.

I paid the $200 early termination fee and went to Verizon...
I was not happy

Hate to mention it but the world of electronics is unfortunately turned into a disposable market. As time goes on it ends up being cheaper in the long run to toss and buy new then repair or upgrade....and unfortunately it's not just going to be electronics...how else do you think they will continue to sell newer better if you could keep it working for a small fee....

Thank goodness I can still get a new Lucas flasher...

Er....ahhh /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Didn't HP try to prevent any other ink arts from working in their printers a while back? I seem to remember something about a chip in the the HP carts that was not available from the third party carts and they wouldn't work with out it.

I don't know about ink specific cartridges, but I do know I used the same printer through three computers...why did I finally have to give it up? They quit making the cartridges. I refilled the ones I had for a few times, but finally had to break down and buy a new one.

I know Canon does that. I just got a new Canon all-in-one for my wife's business, and when she went to Ink America to see about replacement cartridges, they said they weren't available yet for the same reason. Guess we'll have to buy Canon cartridges in the meantime until somebody can reverse-engineer a replacement.
