Thermometer installation

Hi All,
I'm installing my gages into the new dash today and I found myself wanting of information. Should I put any kind of sealer on the threads where the thermometer bulb screws into the cylinder head? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif This looks like one of the few spots that Teflon tape would be good. The head is aluminum if that makes a difference and the car is a BJ8.

Thanks.

Sounds like the tape might be a good idea Greg.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

I agree that teflon would be a good thing. On TRs it screws into an Aluminium tstat housing and after a couple of decades can really get married to that part. I don't know if mine will ever come loose again.

HI Geo, Maybe if you get some PB Blaster and tap lightly on the retainer nut, over time you may be able to loosen it and add the tape.On my Daimler I used this technique to loosen the fender mirror mounts, took me six months but they finaly loosened.---Keoke

Keoke, Thanks for the help. Got the thermometer in today as well as the gauges. There was a little extra wiring that I needed to incorporate into the harness. I THINK I got it right and hopefully the smoke will stay put. Here's a shot of the dash at this point.

Best Wishes,
Greg

Hello GregW
I just put the thermometer bulb into the cylinder head (steel) a couple of days ago. Do you think there is space between the threads to put tape on ?. I used liqud gasket sealer. I think it is hard to fastend the nut because there is so littel space between the nut and the cylinder head.
Do you got two temperatures gauges, or is it one for water temp, and one for oil temp ?

Hi Karl,
I used the Teflon tape on the water temp bulb. No problem except trying to wrench around the radiator shroud.

Best Wishes,
Greg

To All:
Wrenching around the radiator shroud can be simplified if you take an old/cheap deep socket of the proper size and cut a slot in it so it can be slid over the temp sensor line, then pliers or channel locks will let you tighten the nut up.---Keoke----Very nice looking Dash.

Been doiing that but sounds like I have 5 months to go. I like the idea of a deep socket with a slot in it. Have one I use for O2 sensors -- I think I'll make one for that temp sender nut.
