Our 17 year old Granddaughter,who'll be living with us
for the next two years asked me if I'd teach her how to work
on cars.I'll teach her everything I know - that should take
about 5 minutes.


I told her that I'd let her change a wheel on one of the
MG's.I don't think she'd be able to get the wheel off (wire wheels).

Don't underestimate what a PO'd 17 year old with a hammer can do!!! Just tell her that everytime she takes a swing at the knock-off she is striking a blow against gender stereotyping (and in some ways she actually IS).

You don't give yourself enough credit, Doug.

Apparently I've lucked out with the women I've married. Both took up wrenches and became quite competent. Horsemits even earned the respect of the racing crowd back in Pennsylvania, analyzing balance point on a Porsche 944 race prepped engine to lift it into the car and twisting fasteners on same. Teach the young woman basic techniques, how the various systems function and the value of applied leverage. If she's truly interested she will expand on that with hands-on experience. At the very least she gains a self-reliance, an independence when it comes to dealing with vehicle issues. No shop should be able to bamboozle her later. đź‘Ť
 
and, to add to the conversation, at my last church our youth pastor taught the youts (but the young women especially) how to change a tire/ check the oil/ add washer fluid - basic 'stuck by the side of the road' stuff - combined with teaching them to drive stick so they would never be stuck somewhere unable to drive to safety.
