It was 65 years ago today (September 2, 1945) that the Second World War formally ended.
In his announcement of Japan's surrender on August 14, 1945, President Truman said that "the proclamation of V-J Day must wait upon the formal signing of the surrender terms by Japan".
On the morning of September 2, 1945, more than two weeks after accepting the Allies terms, Japan formally surrendered. The ceremonies, less than half an hour long, took place on board the battleship USS Missouri, anchored with other American and British ships in Tokyo Bay. At that time Truman declared September 2 to be the official V-J Day.
