It is fun to look at pre-WW2 cars' horsepowers. You could have a 6L Supercharged V8 and it would barely get to 99mph.

The Mercedes G4 and 770 Grosser are fun reads.
 
That top Mercedes does remind me of an old Lincoln I saw a few years ago at a car show... The Lincoln came in late and had no dash card so everyone was guessing (and admiring), the car was tatty but clearly a runner, certainly looked to be an original condition car... Photos you ask?

That old Lincoln body looks more like a boat. Love that craftmanship.
 
Great stuff! That 42 liter Bentley-Packard is an evil beast!

One of my favourites in this catagory is "Mephistopheles".
An aero-engined FIAT. It's <span style="text-decoration: underline">only</span> got a 22 liter six cylinder, but still a fierce looking thing!

Love these airplanes on wheels. As for the Fiat, wow, that's 3.7 liters per cylinder!!!!!!! I'm envisioning a 2 liter Coke bottle and it's pushing nearly twice that for displacement! Do we know the piston diameters? They must be monsters. :yesnod:

I love the Aero Cars too. My favorite is the Franzisse. It runs a Curtiss OX-5 (Jenny) V-8.
Glenn Curtiss had his shops set up about 60 miles from here.
Here's a video of another OX-5 powered car under construction. I LOVE the sound of that engine!

Holy crap!!! Amazing. And no wonder it gets its big HP (for its time) at only 1700rpm.
 
I think Leno has an aero-car of this vintage.......
 
OK, I think that 42 Liter Packard- Bently is the biggest, nastiest, meanest, old race car I've ever seen!

I see that "with a little work" they doubled its mileage... from 3 to 6mpg! Not bad for the era really. As I recall, there were early, BIG firetrucks that measured fuel consumption is gallons/mile. :yesnod:
