The story of the bad weld seams with MAG-welding..

Hello @all in the world :savewave:,
usually I write in the Healey forum.
I would like to share my bad experience with my MIG/MAG-welding equipment .
I read some times, that it is especially easy to weld with MAG equipment.
(I have very much experience with autogenous welding)
Because of the heat influence I bought me a used professional MIG-welder. I also bought from the gas dealer a gas bottle with argon-gas. I talked with the gas bottle dealer, " I would like to have the best gas mix combination to work on a healey chassis"
At home I try to weld,but I produce not really good weld seam results...The arc load was always a little bit rattle, the seams look always a little bit spongy, also they burn not deep enough in the material...
Ok, I think, i have to adjust the equipment and additional I need more practice.... But my results have been better,but at no time good.
Ok, I think ,I have to go to a welding training.... I start the practice after work.
The equipment of the weld academy was very "old school" with old equipment but I weld like a weld master .... I get results nearly produced by a robot.. I don`t want to knock myself on the shoulder, but I was happy and frustrated together.. Ok, I think my equipment is faulty...
I ordered a service leader of a weld equipment company. He measured all the electric connections and relays, but he did not found a failure...he told me it can be possible that my wire is not thick enough (5x1,5 instead of 5x2,5)....
Now I asked him concerning to his opinion to the gas mix.. What does 4.6 mean?
Now it falls the coin... the mistake was found... I have a 100% Argon gas and this effects that the arc load is to cold. The correct mixture should be 18% CO2 and 82% Argon....( 100% Argon is for WIG-welding)

I went to friends shop the other day. He was struggling mightily with his new MIG welder. I watched him for a few minutes and told him to change polarity. He did, his welding improved and he was very impressed with my knowledge. The welder came set up for self shielding wire. If used with gas, the polarity needed to be switched. I had to much pride to tell him how I knew, I bought the same welder some months previous, you know the rest of the story.

Hello,

the first item what I checked was the polarity.( connections 380V high voltage current) But everything was ok . I changed the whole extension wire into a bigger copper wire.
It is nice to hear that I not the only one in the world, who fight with trivial things...
