ok well I have the intake manifold back on the engine, I have connected up all the wireing and little tubes, I have by passed the heater(its in the shed) and I hit the button, and ... not much... no clicking from the starter cylinoid, I got a small whirr out of something i think its the starter moter, but the engine did not crank over.
so should i just clean the electrail contacts on the starter (will have to have my arms lengthend first) and whack it with a hammer or is there something else mysterious that I dont know?

oh and i have to get it past inspection next month.

its a 67 jag 340 (mk2)
 
A small whirr isn't the starter, when it runs and doen't engage, you'll know it as it is fairly loud. I would guess you're either not getting current to the solenoid, the solenoid has failed or the wire from the ignition switch isn't delivering current to trip the solenoid. In each case I'd start with cleaning the connections, and making sure the connections for the ground strap to the body are good since that completes the circuit. If it ran before, odds are this will correct the problem as long as you got everything you disconnected back where it belongs.
 
yeah that is a good next step, I wish I had thought to clean up the statermotor when i had the carbs off and could get to it.
