The sound of the car; why doesn't it purr?

I just re-installed a Peco today. Cut it of of the '65 and put it on the '67 GT. I had a muffler shop do the work, took about 45 minutes. Guess I should have taken photos of the process! I did have him make up all new pipe from where the header pipes merge into one back to the Peco box. It's all aluminized pipe now rather than the mild steel the Peco came with so it will never rust. That's one thing about Peco, the paint WILL burn off immediately and the pipes will rust.

Thats not for me then, I need something thats gunna stay nice, what are your thought on Falcon?

Peco is available in SS if you don't want to deal with the paint issue. Or, before you install the Peco, strip the paint off and coat with something else. Honestly I have no idea what type of coating would hold up to exhaust pipe temperatures, which is why most mild steel exhaust systems end up all rusty.

If you're having a muffler shop install the system, consider what I did... Throw away the pre-bent pipes that Peco sends and have the shop make custom pipes from aluminuzed steel. It will never rust and has thicker walls than SS or mild steel. It is also less affected by heat change than either of those materials which means less chance of leaks down the road. Stainless is notorious for expanding and contracting which leads to leaks. I also recommend welding all seams. Clamps distort tubing and will always develop leaks over time.

As for the Falcon, I just pulled a Falcon SS off my GT and I'm much happier now. It's a fine exhaust system but the Peco is built much more sturdy (it weighs three times as much!) and I prefer the deeper, smoother sound. But that's just personal preference. Plus, I'm sure the Falcon Big Bore would sound different than the Falcon SS I had.

Rather than pay for the Peco SS system, I now have 2" aluminized steel pipe running from my header back (attached just behind the 2-1) to the steel Peco rear box, which has retained it's paint. Apparently the pipes get much hotter than the box itself which is why the paint peels.

well break out the handy-cam and make us a demo reel of the Peco... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I don't think anyone on that Malibu run had a Peco system on their car... I did notice a couple "Monza" style exhausts though. I don't recall them making any type of impression (good or bad) when I heard them all either.

oh uhm... I suppose I could post the Falcon clip... but then, I guess you might want to comment on it? or something?

Unless things have changed, the Peco header fit is crap. The flanges are thinner than the intake flanges, so I welded washers on to make up the difference. Then I found that the flanges are also too wide, so had to grind them down a bit. Sounds great though. The red paint does burn off, and I painted mine with Eastwood's exhaust paint.

So far so good, but it's only got 300 miles on it. The nice thing is that it can easily be touched up, and a pint did my whole exhaust with a lot left over for touch ups. It smokes and stinks when you first heat it up, but eastwood says that's part of the "cure" process.
