I have to agree about the defunct Smart Roadster. I actually contemplated getting one of those. They looked sporty. Too bad they never made it to the American market.

The first time I encountered a Smart while driving the Midget I was amazed that it still seemed tiny. The Smart, that is. But I'll bet they are a blast to parallel park.

I think the Smart has it's place, and that place is in the city. I saw loads of them in my hood when I was living in Chicago, and frankly, the crowded one way residential neighborhood streets were tailor made for a Smart, rather than most other cars out there. My sister's Jeep Grand Cherokee felt like it wasn't going to fit down the street, but the Smarts I drove were right at home.

I understand that many here don't like the Smart for whatever reason. What I don't understand is the hate I'm reading (or read early on). I would think that a bunch of people who drive around in small old cars would at least appreciate where the Smart is coming from, rather than dismiss it outright.

Man, those were FUN cars! My sister had one back in the mid-1970s (at the same time that her then-husband had a '49 Hudson Commodore!), and I got to borrow it a few times -- the Honda, not the Hudson; very enjoyable! There's still one in my barn, and my 20-year-old daughter occasionally reminds me that I oughta do something with it. We'll see....
