Okay-okay... PB Blaster has been the weasel-pee of chioce in th' shop for decades. Kroil a close second. It just wasn't as easy to locate as PBB. A few months back Mickey posted the emperical info on a concoction of ATF and acetone, 50/50 mix.

I've been stopped in my MGB front-end refresh by some REALLY horribly rusted-in-place V-8 lower control arm bushings. The inner sleeves were so badly rusted they were as if welded to the pin... PB, banging, heat-wrench (propane: I'm at th' hovel and scant tools to-hand), pipe wrench after burning/melting the rubber portion of the front one off, No Joy for days of frustration.

This AM a neighbor came over to borrow a tool to re-trolly the sliding glass door in the back, he said the bolts were so rusted they wouldn't budge. I recalled this mix of ATF and acetone and mixed some up. Gave him an ounce or so, had same left. Poured some on the front sleeve of this pin and started whacking and putting torque on it with a pipe wrench. Inside fifteen minutes it budged! Another ten of back-and-forth and it was OFF! The rear is now getting the same treatment, it has already begun to move. Only about a 20* arc now but I'm CERTAIN it'll ba off there directly!

I think I'll go inna hovel now an' brush me teeth with this stuff!!! :jester: :smirk:

#2 is away!!!

...an' me choppers is PINK now. :jester:

weasel-pee huh. LOL

<shuddering at the thought of Doc's poor choppers> LOL

Next Doc will be using it as a meat tenderizer.

hmmm.....

Doc - I did some reading/experimenting and found that 30% acetone, 70% ATF did the trick.

Or was it 31%/69%?

or maybe 29%/71%?

or ...

Anyway, for some reason the 50/50 wasn't as effective for me. I used the 30/70 to remove the corroded vacuum tank on the Benz.

Put it on and ~then~ hit it with the torch. I can GUARENTEE something's gonna move then !!!!

Exactly! At least, that's the way my dentist does it.

I used ATF and acetone, 50/50 mix today as I had 350 V8 Chevy engine locked solid in my Nasty Boy Healey.Pry bars on the flywheel would budge this locked motor.Car had not run since about 1983 today a bunch of this weasel [censored] down the bores under pressure helped unlock the sleeping beast.By four we had it up and running with some gas down the carb.

I have shamelessly copied this from another site:

*Don't forget the April 2007 "Machinist's Workshop" magazine comparison
test.*
**
*They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with
the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a
"scientifically rusted" environment.*
**

*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*

None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

*The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50% acetone - 50% automatic transmission fluid.*
*Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one
particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about
as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price. *

Cheers

Goin to the hardware/parts stores tomorrow. I need a woodruff key for my Briggs motor, some solid core spark plug wire, a roll of gasket material, and now a bottle of acetone.
I betchya that'll do the trick on my ELTO motor.

It really did work. I'm a convert.

Doesn't matter.

's why the mention of MMO. I bet that'd be good too.

It doesn't actually go into solution, either. It has to be shaken to emulsify before application. It turns a *pretty pink* colour!

Acetone is nasty stuff, be careful not to breathe it.

I've heard of it's penetrating power but never tried it because I ALWAYS have a can or two of PB Blaster nearby! PB is one of the things I never want to be without in my shop.

Good stuff. :yesnod:

I always have a gallon of acetone around. Good for a LOT of things. It is really volatile tho.

Back in the day when I was researching clandestine Meth labs, I read that you don't want to pour acetone from too high. Say when your filling a 55 gallon drum. The book said the friction of the air will cause the acetone to ignite.

That sounds volatile enough by its self!
