ok we were 180 out with the 45d dizzy and we did static timing at 30ish degrees. and its running but not happy and there is a bit of exhaust leak, sigh

30 degrees static? 30 degrees dynamic at 3k to 4k RPM might be OK. Static should be closer to 5 or 10 degrees. With 30 degrees of static timing I would expect the engine to "kick back" on the starter motor making it nearly impossible to start.
