The mg and gas prices

Steve, that's in the GTS I suppose?
I commonly got 25 mpg on the freeway with my MGC - but it was completely stock.

Yes, it's the GTS and no, it ain't stock! This is the main reason I get 12-14 MPG in normal driving...

Steve - you should do better than that on the MGC. I know mine has only 3 SUs, but I get mid-20s easily and on my Italian car, which has double the carburetion you have, I still get better than your MGC.

Do you think you have a tuning issue? I've seen a lot of Weber set-ups set way to rich, for instance.

I'm definitely running rich, but it needs to be. Doug Smith recommends a minimum of 5% CO2 on this engine, preferably 6%.

Mileage on the highway at 80-90MPH is about 17. The best I've managed so far was 19 from one tank. I've heard similar numbers from a couple guys with their engine set up similar to mine. Double the power of stock, and half the fuel economy! Considering it's a "fun car" and not a daily driver I'd say that's a fair trade-off.

A separate intake for each cylinder...
Priceless!!

Looking at the specs for your engine I can see two things:

It should suck fuel like a (lets keep this family friendly...)
and
It should go like a bat outta heck!!!

That's a beautiful thing Steve, thanks for sharing.

LOL!!! It does go like a flying rodent out of hades, but it isn't entirely forgiving when you push it to the edge. If you get into trouble with that car, you're really in trouble! It certainly doesn't drive like anything I've owned before. Not that I'm saying it's a BAD thing, mind you.

I get 14 MPG on my B.
You should be getting up to double that.

I get at least 24 MPG with the B, it's cammed and fed with that 40 DCOE fuel pump. Somethin's not right, Dimitri.

Hi Folks,

The Diesel prices here in NE PA avg. $4.60 gal.

Mike, Your 110% correct! I know an independant trucker who has 2 trucks & trailers. He owes the bank big $$$ on ea. Between the payments, Insurance etc etc. He`s just about ready to go Belly-Up!!

He was telling me that on "JULY 1ST"; The truckers are "TRYING" to get together and park their vehicles for a "WEEK"!!

"IF" this works; I suspect we should see some significant downturn in gas costs. I believe this was tried back in the 70s when we had a so-called "Gas Shortage" & It never happened.

So; Lets all hope it does happen this time & God Bless the truckers if they in-fact park their trucks for a week. I feel even "ONE DAY" of parked trucks would impact the gas prices.

Another friend of mine bought a "Hummer" (The Big One) about 3yrs. ago to the tune of approx. $60-$70K. Status symbol only! He currently has 50K mi. on her & is in exc. cond. He`s been trying to dump it for $25K and not even a looker! So; If some of you "HUMMER LOVERS" out there, who like these things, PM me and I`ll give you the gents personal info.

Best Wishes to all of us,

Russ

Steve, Stewart and Doc,

I've been wondering what the heck is going on for years but I am very confused. Oil pressure is good, close to 3/4 when motor is warm and on the fwy, idles at 1000 and since putting these new spark plugs does not hesitate. It runs like it should. :confuse:

This is what I love about America..we all can drive whatever the heck we want. We have a landrover (looking to upgrade to an H2 at some point), 2 MG, audi and a pickup.

Do we NEED them all. No. Do we want them. Yes.

If I want to drive my rover all day and night, so be it. Just because others think it is stupid, I don't agree. We drive what we want because we like it. Fuel mileage has never been a deciding factor (nor will it).

There is more to life than gas mileage.

I am not crazy about filling the pickup (34 gallon tank) at $80+ but so be it. It is what it is.

Unless we are breaking some law driving a truck without a huge payload in back, let us have our SUV/trucks and stop judging our choice in vehicles.

OK...being a LBC Forum, there is bound to be some SUV/Pickup bashng going on here. You have the right to drive whatevery you want, but more and more people are dring these vehicles than should...or perhaps can. All I ask is:
1) when you are done passing, get the heck out of the left lane and let others pass;
2) Show some common courtesy and don't intimidate other smaller vehicles because you are bigger;
3) Learn how to drive a large vehicle safely;
3) Turn off the fricking fog lights!

BTW, I have always owned some form of SUVs/pickup for over 35 years, so no, I am not just "envious".

Just my two cents worth...I know it doesn't apply to all, but more and more, it seems.

I have them all, SUVs, Trucks, and little cars. You have to admit and I'm not bashing anyone on this forum, but there are a lot of people out there driving large vehicles with their head up their butt, who could care less about anyone else. You see it more around large cities where people think their driving in the Indy 500 everyday. I feel sorry for you folks that live in the cities and have to contend with this every day. I know we all can't live in the country. The only solution I know is, always be very careful driving and trust no one! Always assume the other guy is out to get you. Don't get mad and lower yourself to the other guys way of thinking. We don't want to hear about you on the evening news,

Here's one idea:
Make it mandatory that everyone learn to drive a motorcycle before they can progress to a car.
That would solve a lot of problems.
Once you have to dodge an H2 on the freeway on your little Yamaha 650 you should learn many great lessons.

agree. The focus should be on poor drivers, that just happen to drive an SUV poorly/inconsiderately.

I see bad and unsafe driving on a daily basis, usually by other cars. But I guess it is easier to dump on truck owners. I almost got hit by a Maxima today, she was changing lanes in and out of slower cars, no signaling. I changed lanes and she changed just behind me missing me by inches and honked at me.. like it was my fault I wanted to get to the offramp! SUV/truck owners do not hold an exclusive on bad behavior.

It is not the trucks fault.. it is the driver. The focus should be on the driver driving bad (regardless of vehicle)

Here in Boston, I almost never take the rover into the city, as almost none of the garage have enough clearance. Finding street parking is insane at best.

Heck I would wish that driver training should be a lot tougher overall. It is wayyyyyy to easy to get a license, at least here in MA.

The problem is the people driving the vehicle, not the vehicle itself.

>>>>Heck I would wish that driver training should be a lot tougher overall. It is wayyyyyy to easy to get a license, at least here in MA.<<<<
Irrespective of the vehicle, we seem to agree that driving intelligently is a major issue. I once approached my state senator about initiating a program whereby the driving instructors were held responsible for their student's actions. The plan was to assess the teacher a point for every "bad driving" ticket. Every kid is gonna speed and roll a few stop signs, that's expected. But tailgaiting, not signalling, solid line violations...you know the dangerous ones are the ones that the student needs to be taught about. (I once had a student driver put his blinker on, and slow to a crawl to allow me to pass, per his instructor. The problem was they were going up a hill on a two lane country road and he didn't pull over he just slowed to a crawl, he may have stopped I didn't hang around to find out as I was forced to pass on an upgrade. That guy shouldn't be teaching anyone anything.)Anyways after any teacher's students have amassed a significant, say 500 points or significantly higher than his peers, he gets his license yanked for a certain amount of time. The idea is he returns as a better teacher, thereby increasing the ratio of good to bad teachers.Problem was half these lousy drivers are so old our teachers are dead, so the solution was deemed to be "agist" (let's not forget where we are!!) and was dropped. Still a good idea, imo. By the way most Mass and Rhode Island drivers drive like they got their license at Sears.

Gas prices and mgs
Its really about evolution.

The gas crises in the late 70's made me stop and think when I would fill up my fathers 56 Chevy that there has to be other options to keep as much green in my wallet as possible. I really liked the styling of the cars of the early 50's and 60's and wanted to find one for the long run which would be a little more fuel efficient thenthe standard v8's. I looked into porsche 356's and austin healeys but found the MGA as the cost affective solutionsince you could pick up one for anywhere between $500 and $1000.

Gas prices will always go up. We all know that. But still people go out and buy more amnd more wastefull machines. Someone told me once that the Ford Model T got 25 miles to the gallon and it has been in Fords best interest to keep gas milage around there.

So for the next few years we will all get adjusted to these over $4 prices before in say 5 or 10 years it doubles that number. We will see more and more of the smaller engine cars of yesterday on the roads as daily drivers and more of the v8's in car shows on trailers.

There will always be suv's and other v8's on the road but it will now be a little more painful to drive them.
I am very happy I said no thanks to my Dad's 56 chevy and purchased my MGA when I did and I love it now as a daily driver.
