- a film I am *really* looking forward to; I dealt with something very similar in my early years. What George VI went through to be "the voice of the English people" just before WW2 - totally overwhelming. And in many ways - totally triumphant.

About the "True Grit" film, I'm strangely reluctant to see it. I think Jeff Bridges is talented, but it almost seems sacreligious to remake this film without John Wayne - like it's almost doomed before it begins, in my mind.

John Wayne was one-of-a-kind, no actor can ever replace him in my opinion. Like him or not as a person, but as an actor, NO ONE acting today can hold a torch to him in this genre of western-themed movies.

Randolph Scott, too.

The reviewers say the "True Grit" is not a remake of the John Wayne film. They went back to the book and the resulting film is very different. I haven't seen it but I expect to in the next week.
 
Mark, that is how I felt also, and still do to some extent. But I also saw the reviews and decided to take a look.

BTW - if True Grit fans are ever in the Ft Smith area of Arkansas or Oklahoma the Judge Parker museum is a very interesting place to visit. It is part of the National Park system.

And don't miss Old Hwy 71 from Fayetteville to Alma. One of the more beautiful drives in the Nation.
 
Steph wants to see True Grit.

She loves the John Wayne version but having read the book said they softened maddie's character and made a few other changes. It looks like this version is more like the book protrays.
 
We watched the John Wayne True Grit on the TV a couple of days ago - still great.

Xmas Eve we went to see the new one with some trepidation, but we both thought it was excellent. Bridges and the girl were very good.
