The joys of home ownership..

Returned from a short trip to Philadelphia to find our a/c fan inoperative on the hottest day of the summer. Repairman showed up (at time and 1/2) and found a dead circuit board. Current in, no current out. He spliced wire together and bypassed the board and now we have a/c again but we have to turn the fan off with the kill switch at the top of the cellar stairs. They'll order the new board but it may not be available since our system is old. The compressor is original to the house which was built in 1950 or so. They built them to last in those days. Today, they build them to fail according to our repairman. BTW, Philly these days is a great place to visit. We rode for nothing on city buses as seniors. Great restaurants too as well as the usual tourist stiff - Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Barnes Museum, Art Museum with "Rocky" steps, etc. A far cry from the 1950s when I was a student there.

Wow, 66 years is a pretty good run for a compressor!

Currently on the first phase of upgrades of my house. Installing ac right now which should be done next week. However the upgraded power service to go with it is in limbo as SCE is way behind. They claimed you don't need ac here but after 2 summers of sweating I had enough. Next up in replacing close to 30 windows. After that the family room gets new floors and the ceiling vaulted. And the only part I'm really looking forward to is the garage is also getting the ceiling lifted to make space for a storage lift.

As an update to the original topic, first real rain occurred this weekend and this morning, didn't expect any issues, but nice to see under actual conditions no leaks.

calling for lots of rain here too - mercifully not as much as Louisiana - sad to hear of the the loss of life and flooding. Last Saturday I had to pour concrete - we pulled out the carpet on the stairs to the apartment - and the cr*ppy laminate only to find the subfloor was made up of particle board on top of 2X4's meaning the actual "floor" was almost 4 inches lower than the driveway. fortunately it (the driveway) slopes away but, now at least they are the correct height.

Ain't it nice how people in air conditioned offices can assure you you're not really as uncomfortable as you think.

Just because Santa Barbara is reputed to have suffered the highest temperature ever recorded in the US until finally being one-upped by Death Valley*, doesn't mean you will ever feel the heat.

*OK, meteorologists say the reputed temperature of 133deg is a myth, but they all agree it was friggen hot.

So you think *you* have house problems -

Might be worse for the guy next door. The house in the hole you know it's all gone. The neighbor may just have to sit and wait to be swallowed with no chance to rescue the contents.

Wow - after seeing your neighbor's house sink into that pit, just imagine trying to get to sleep at night. Wife says "honey - what's that noise?"

Very hard to imagine something like that happening and folks loosing a lifetime of possessions, let alone the possibility of their life. Seems to be a lot of sink hole problems around the country any more. Our house is built on solid rock, but things like this makes you wonder about how safe you really are, like, what's under the solid rock! PJ

What's under the rock?

And under that - it's turtles all the way down.

It's funny ever since they delivered the ac unit it's been awesomely cool weather here. They still need to get it out of my garage and hook it all up though.
