It is a beautiful film, one of my favorites. In fact, my wife and I went to Austria & Germany for vacation this summer and stayed in Salzburg for three days. That's where "The Sound of Music" was filmed. My wife insisted that we take a "Sound of Music" tour while there. I reluctantly agreed and we booked the tour before leaving the states.
It was a very professionally done tour. The tour operators indicated that Sound of Music tours are a multi-million dollar business in Salzburg. Capt. Von Trapp's "lake house" was in Salzburg at a beatiful villa, just on the outskirts of Salzburg.
Also, The Sound of Music wasn't screened in Austria until the year 2000. Most Austrians never heard "Edelweiss" 'til then.
Anyway, old Capt. Von Trapp was quite a fellow. Sad to see "Kurt" go.
The villa below served as the "Von Trapp" home in the movie.
Look just above the villa and you'll see Salzburg Castle:
This is where Liesel and her boyfriend (can't remember his name) sang "Sixteen going on Seventeen":
Took my wife and daughter to Stowe Vermont in 2005. One reason was to show them the Von Trapp lodge there. When I explained that this was where the family settled after their run from Austria, they where thoroughly impressed. Sad to see such an illustrious person pass on.

P.S. one of my fav movies as well
There is a home a couple miles from Sugarbush across the road from a nursery run by one of the grandchildren and lived in by them. It was originally built for a distant ancestor of mine, and I try to drive by whenever we are in the area. My Father-in-law recounted staying in the lodge in the early 50's and they were burning real candles on the lobby Christmas tree. That lodge burned down, no connection to the candles tho.
My favorite line in the movie was when they were announcing the family at the music festival. "The Von Trapp Family singers......... The Von Trapp family singers! " The stage hand rushes in "they've gone!".
We use that as a family joke often. (guess ya had to be there)
sissy??? i sang in the chorus from 5th grade till first year of high school, that song was one of my favs. none of the other "tough" guys ever gave me any guff about doing so, guess they liked it as well.
law guy, your right, i watched it in the "graham" movie theater in the sheepshead bay area of Brooklyn, each time the movie would be over i hid in one of the stalls in the mens room till the new audience cycled and watched it again and again till the theater close.
