Our '67 MGB GT quit running in July,after almost attending a local car show.I was sure that it was the head gasket,but after (proudly)pulling it down,I'm not surethat what was happened. Anyway,I've sent the '78 B210 to the "other" garage,& moved the GT to ours.After pulling the head,& seeing no problems,I was thinking that I'd made a BIG mistake,but need to get the head to the machine shop before being an idiot. - Doug
 
so, what happened then Doug, if it isn`t the gasket, we still need to diagnose
 
Keep in mind it's a machine shops job to sell machine work. It's not in there for a valve job, we want to know if it's flat or cracked, that's it.
 
So far - it's just one exhaust valve.
I get excited,just looking at it - am I weird?

O.K, bent/burnt valves count. Carefull putting a fresh head on a worn bottom end as they tend to start smoking. I'd have them hand lap the one to check the seat and if all good go with it. Then again, a good used head might be a better option. (IMHO of course....)
 
Before you send the head in, re-install some plugs, flip it, pour solvent in the combustion chambers and wait. Lever drops, ports get wet, valves are leaking, due to bent valves, burned valves, cracked seats.
I always clean the combustion chamber afterwards, looking for cracks, pull the valves, check for loose guides and bent stems, check actual condition of seats and faces, re-assemble (valve specific)m and send the head in for the work I know it needs.
Was it running rough? Steam out the pipe?

We used to do valves on older MGB's frequently. More often it seems than on old Model A Fords.
 
I don't know if I explained it - but the head is back from the machine shop -
the owner said "There's no charge",as he knows that I volunteer my time to the
local Fire Department.
I told him that I felt uncomfortable with this,as I don't expect compensation
for what I do.I do it for the Right reasons.I accepted his offer - am i wrong?

Never deprive others the opportunity to do something kind - you do it for the right reasons, he was doing it for the right reasons too. :cheers:

Yep - funny how along with the problem we humans have with giving, we also don't quite know how to receive.

Pass it on; best way to honor the giver.
 
Doug, my machine shop use to give me freebies all the time and I just made "payment" later with a 12 pack, or more, of their favorite beverage.
Usually Coke.
They were both recovering alcs.
