The Groaning Steering Column - Where to Oil?

Hi Everyone.

Just completing a rebuild of a BJ8 Dash and Trafficator. While testing the steering wheel, I noticed quite a groaning noise upon moving the steering wheel back and forth.

The noise does not appear to be from the steering box which I just adjusted, but rather higher up the column near the clamp bolt that holds the column under the dash. I removed the dust cap that seats the small end of the adjustable wheel's dust cover. Under this it appears that there is a felt bush. I don't think I want to stick oil down there to eliminate the problem.

Is it possible that I have over tightened the steering column clamp? Can that felt bush be removed without dismantling the whole column? Any other tricks in Healey land for the groaning wheel?

Hi Andrew, by all means inject a bit of oil into that felt bush and see if the noise goes away.---Fwiw--Keoke
