If you listened to some of their "raw" studio work (like from the Beatle's Anthology) compared to the same songs with George Martin's production genius applied, you can clearly see (hear) how important his work was to the finished product.
 
There was a story on his passing last night on the news. A clip they played was of him saying that when he first heard them he didn't feel the music was something that could be sold. But what finally sold him on giving them a try was the charisma of the group. I'm sure he was happy he didn't let it be just a pure business decision.
