The colour Magenta was used on Triumphs, and MG used a different shade/colour name. The colour of your car is "Aconite", and was discontinued in February of 1975. So yes he is right, very rare, and considering that only 1247 were brought over here, yours may be unique amongst those cars left. Paint codes are not to be found on the car itself, but the codes you will need are as follows:-
BL #: BLVC 95
PPG Code: 14728
DuPont: 43274

Thanks John and Steve. Yes it does get exciting.
That is, without a doubt, the colour in the bay. I also was chipping the red paint bubbles around the windshield, and came across the origional colour about three layers down.
The colour looks fantastic on the car on the site linked.

Mirage is very pale. Looks almost like a silver in some light. Lilac in other light. Sometimes sorta pale blue. Neat color. Mirage was also 73 only, IIRC, and then only part year. One of the rarer MG colors.
If it's 74 it's aconite. Rare, but not super rare. Another very nice color, although I like Black Tulip a bit more.

Good day... Not quite sure of the spelling, but I had my Triumph in for a Carb. tuneup yesterday, and showed the pictures of my GT to my mechanic. I hadn't really made notice of it before, but he told me that the origional colour of the car was Magenta, from looking at the engine bay. He also said that this was a very rare colour for the GT's of these years. I must admit, I don't think I have seen any MG's with this dark plum like colour, but after cleaning up the bay a bit, I really like it. I am thinking of having it painted this colour when the time comes.
Where do I find the paint code on the 74.5 GT, and does anyone have a picture of their's this colour?

they only made them for about 6 months in 74 Baxter. The acid rain that fell on them in the export parking area ruined the paint, causing many of them to be repainted before they left the factory

Which were only made for about 6 months Chuck? Here is a picture of the engine bay before I got a chance to clean it up. It clearly shows the darker Plum like colour being the origional.

Mirage was only made for 6 months, my buddy has a mirage 74. your car was not mirage

Yep - me too. I was going to paint the '73 British Green, but saw one in Black Tulip at a show last year, and really liked it. And since I went to that school down in Baton Rouge, the color is perfect!

Yep - me too. I was going to paint the '73 British Green, but saw one in Black Tulip at a show last year, and really liked it. And since I went to that school down in Baton Rouge, the color is perfect!

While your on the subject of paint colors, which color do you think my RB GT is? I was originally thinking Damask Red, but after seeing the cars on the teglerizer page, I'm thinking Flamenco when it's dry and maybe Carmine when it's wet.
Any thoughts?

Hmmm, well, I would suggest Damask Red. Flamenco is an orange red, so the Telgerizer reference is wrong. He probably just loaded the wrong picture, that can happen.
They didn't use Carmine or Flamenco for the 1974 1/2 cars either, it was Damask or Blaze, which is definitely an orange colour.

If the standard colors for 74.5 were Damask or Blaze, mine is certainly not Blaze.
Referring back to the Flamenco example on the teglerizer index page, what color is that car if it's not Flamenco? As much as I hate to admit it, mine looks more like that car than the Damask Red example. I haven't scanned my photos of the firewall behind the dash yet, but that area resembles that mystery color even moreso.

The car in the background is a 1974 GT I was received from a local shop. The owner left the car for a restoration quote and gave it away after hearing what it would cost. From what I understand, the car was sold, but the engine failed as it was being delivered. The owner bought it back (refunded the fellow's money, so I am told) and took it to the shop that eventually arranged for it to be given to me. The best I can tell it has been 6 years since it was last operated.
It is currently serving as a parts supplier for the 74.5.

After taking a third lok at the Aconite color, I'm certain mine is not. It almost reminds me of the "Plum Crazy" color that Dodge used in the early 70's, only much nicer.
Repaint is still quite some time in the future. I guess I'll have to get a few samples of the various reds mixed up for a close-up comparison before making a final decision. I can live with Damask, but maintaining the original hue might be an advantage.
Time will tell
