I have always known that Daytons were the best of the best. I was talking to a friend the other day and he is saying the Dunlops from India are now superior. I am looking to purchase some new wheels for my BJ8 and now I am confused. Will some body please give some relief? Thank you very much, Jeff

Jeff, since you are in NC, why don't you check with Allen Hendrix (http/www.hendrixwirewheel.com). He knows more about wire wheels than anybody I know.

Is your BJ8 in the registry?

O.K., I bought Dayton wires with stainless spokes in 1991 and currently have 95,176 miles on them. I'm beginning to find a broken spoke now and again, but I guess that's to be expected with the mileage. That experience is probably too old to do you any good. At the time I bought my wheels the Dunlops from India had a really bad reputation. I hope they are better now. Hendrix has done all my wheel tuning and spoke replacement for the last 10 years and I am a thoroughly pleased customer. Knowing Allen as I do, I don't believe he would give you biased information, even if he does sell wheels.

I have bought both the Moss ( Dunlop) and Dayton chrome wire wheels. Had a set of the Moss wheels on a BN6 and had no issue with them for the 3 years I owned it before getting my 100M. When I got it I upgraded to chrome wheels and decided to go with the Dayton chrome wheels mainly due to the reputation, etc. I was not unhappy with the Dunlops, just figured let's get the better wheel by reputation, and of course more $$$. Bottom line I have been very disappointed with the Dayton wheels. I purchased the 48 spoke wheels to keep it as original as possible and have had to send back two wheels to Dayton for rework in 2 years. Multiple loose spokes, even a broken spoke for a car that is not driven hard at all. Dayton did redo the wheels at no charge but I of course had to dismount the tires, box up and ship back to Dayton at my cost. Gets expensive when you have to do it twice and now I watch them like a hawk and have even put the blue loctite ( some will cringe on that) on new loose spokes as I find them to try to stay ahead of the problem. Wheels will be 3 years old soon and any warranty will expire so hopefully my diligence watching for the loose spokes will pay off with no more failures. Personally I would not buy them again and stick with the Dunlops from Moss. As you are in NC but not sure where exactly, would really recommend you call Alan Hendrix in Greensboro and talk to him. Believe he sells both and if close, take your BJ8 there and let him do his magic to a new set. His number is 336/852-8909. Currently not a customer but his reputation is great !

I think that anybody's 48 spoke wheels would give an issue (sorry Mike...) they're just too weak. Even if the car isn't driven hard, today's tire technology just cannot be compared to the grip level that was available in the late 40s-50s. DMH had a contract to use the 48 spokers, or he would've switched to the 60s much sooner (don't remember where I read that, but it was published__my imagination isn't creative enough to have made it up).

Stock for the BJ8 would be 60 spokes, so you're already at an advantage, longevity-wise, than 100-100/6 (correct) wheel patterns.

I'm still very pleased with the Dayton chrome wire wheels I bought (72 spoke, well-laced), and since this shot was the first time they rolled out of the garage, they're coming up on three (<3) years old and no loose spokes, and no issues whatsoever with chrome plating (hubs & rimes, the spokes are stainless alloy). I would recommend and/or buy them again.

No matter what wheel you decide to go with! If i where you, I would order them from Hendrix wire wheel. His outstanding reputation speaks for itself! At least when they leave Hendrix wire wheel, they will be right! Not to mention he is a really great guy. I am still riding on my original 60 spoke wheels with no issues at all with 44,000 miles on them.
 
Mine came from British Wire Wheels but that was almost 10 years ago. I don't know if they manufactured them or not. What I do know is that they are 48 and in all my years of driving and I do drive Agatha a lot, I've only had a few spokes brake, less than 5 for sure. I also knew when a I broke a couple - pot hole.

Anyway, I would also suggest that you go to Hendrix as I would be guided by their advice. Alan would never steer you wrong. (How's that for a pun?)

I was looking @ the 72 spoke , tubeless , wheels, I really do not have the extra funds to go thru a dealer , even I know the service is good.Has anyone have had any information on tubeless wheels , does the seal hold up ? Once again thank you all & Merry Christmas , Jeff
 
Mine are tubeless, and other than the fall/spring routine of adjusting the air pressures, have not needed any other topping off.

Tubeless:

Tubeless advantages:
- tires run cooler
- less chance of flats due to chafing of tube

Tubeless disadvantages:
- can't tune spokes without R&R the sealant
- dis/mount of tires can damage seal, requiring R&R

I've run tubeless for years, but mine were sealed by wire wheel specialists. No data on the manufacturer-sealed wheels, but would assume they would be comparable to my hand-sealed tires. Bottom line: I prefer tubeless.

I bought a set on ebay about 4 years ago, I think they came from New York, the guy also sold gear reduction starters. They've been on my BJ8 with tubeless tires with no problems whatsoever except some very minor surface spotting on the inside of one wheel that won't polish out.
 
Ain't never seen no metal nothings that come out of India that was any good
 
At the risk on incurring the wrath of Koeke whose opinion I respect, I support the choice of the Indian made Dunlop wheel. I have no experience of the Dayton product. I fitted Dunlop chrome plated/stainless steel 60 spoke wheels on my 100 several years ago and have had no trouble with the plating, or the spoke tension.
Since fitting these wheels I have done several long distance trips, and in Australia, 'long distance' means exactly that and on roads that would probably be classed as 'tracks' by North American standards.
