I just finished installing the Lempert gear set into my 65 BJ8. Not only do I like the way the car drives, but it also corrected my speedometer.
Ever since my dad bought the car in 1970, the speedometer has indicated a significantly faster speed than the car was traveling. Once the 3.56 gear set was installed and I drove it on the highway with a coworker who brought along his GPS, the speedometer indication was exactly the same as the GPS all the way up to 70 MPH. At 70 MPH the car was only going 68 MPH on the GPS.
I conclude that when the car was manufactured, they simply used the speedometer/gearing they had on hand in the parts bin. The 3.56 ratio was used on the earlier cars that did not have overdrive so they must have had too many speedometers left over that were built for the 3.56 ratio instead of the 3.91 ratio of the overdrive cars. It is nice knowing how fast I am going for a change. When driving around town, I don't feel the need to switch on the overdrive.
....
I tried posting some adds on the classified section but it was asking for my password and didn't like it for some reason.
I now have two differential related items for sale to forum members;
1.. A standard differential carrier assembly removed from my car with 80,000 miles, ( less 10-12 % for speedometer error),
It was working fine when I removed it. It is the standard 3.91 ratio for overdrive cars. I want $150.00 plus shipping for it.
It can be used as is or use it to install your Lempert gear set and then swap the whole assembly into your car. That is what I did to minimize down time.
2.. A matched ring and pinion set with 100,000 miles on it that I removed from the extra differential carrier assembly that is now installed in my car with my Lempert gear set.
I'll take $100.00 plus shipping for the set.
If you are interested in either item, send me a PM.
