Seriously, is it electric or gas?
Take the panals off, clean it out real good and check the thermocouple. Most commonly that's the cause.
 
I was thinking more of a road flare....
It's electric,& I'm pretty sure that it's the switch
on the heating part of it - all corroded + broken.
Only 29+ years - class action lawsuit?

Hmmm.. I think your class action should be to replace the switch, then you can dry your law suit.
I'd have understood if my fridge had been 29+ years old, but 5 is a bit too soon.
