When my youngest son was young and began texting to his friends via Instant Messenger, I would watch with amazement how he could carry on 3 or more "conversations" simultaneously with his friends, all of whom depended on acronyms and abbreviations to get their message across. I gave him a challenge. Don't use shortcuts, type everything out with full spelling and punctuation. He took the challenge and ran with it, and to this day will communicate with his friends with proper English, at amazing speeds. He did himself a favor and is a better man for it.

IWADASN

Bill,
Great lesson for your son. I appreciate when capitalization, punctuation, and a modicum of grammar appear on my other lists. Thanks to the caliber of the membership here, it is the norm and makes it a joy to read the posts...
Great job of parenting.

Wow, I like how you got out of that one! I haven't seen that much maneuvering on a disco dance floor!

Intresting, I notise no menschun off propper speling. Dus thaat mean wee arr difishant in thaat areah? Sum off the speling I sea on intenit fourums tooday is juust horindus, horendis, oh dang it, just plane baad.

I appreciate the use of the abbreviations in the texting. I don't understand them all, but I appreciate the use of them (anyone used to spending hours sending morse code understands where they come from).

What I can't stand is when you get on a website and people start using things like "b4", "l8r" and a bunch of others while typing out regular paragraphs. Even better is when they stick in something stupid like "every1". I mean, come on! You can text a million words a minute and can type just as fast. How much effort does it take to type two more characters to say "everyone"?

It's a pet peeve of mine too

PS: Doc we're only as old as we feel, so... well crud, nevermind.
