Test drive

I had the nicest test drive this evening. It is really cool here compaired to how it has been.

Noted that I now have 200 miles on the car and about 13 gal of fuel, however that includes a lot of fuel loss when I was trying to sort out the carbs. I bet I put three gal on the floor over that month or so, so my estimate is at least 20 MPG for real running time.

Noted that the second gear detent is also smoothing out on its own. Guess useing it some is knocking of the rough edge on the shift shaft, got a bit to go though.

Parts today, not much but now have all the bits to install the tonneau cover next week.

Still need to pull the engine and replace the oil pump. Maybe we will get a coolish spell before too long.

Jack,

Do you take the bonnet off to pull the engine?

Bruce -

I just went through this on my '59 this past winter.

There are some people that swear you can remove the engine and gearbox from a Bugeye without removing the bonnet. One theory is that the bonnet will swing up out of the way once you detatch the side supports. Did not work for me. Not even close.

Another theory is that you can jack up the engine and gearbox and roll them out the front, over the steering rack. Never tried this approach, but it might work.

I went with pulling the pins from the bonnet hinges under the dash and lifting the bonnet off with the hinges remaining attached to the bonnet. With three people, it took less than two minutes to remove, and later attach the bonnet to the Bugeye.

I should add that there are others who would mark the hinges on the bonnet, and then remove the eight bolts and lift it off that way. I was afraid of alignment afterwards as well as having enough hands to tackle this method.

Just my thoughts and experience. I am certain that others will respond with their ideas.

Jack will never finish Miss Agatha....hehehehe...I'll start the pool on how many times he rebuilds her....

Ha, Tony. You are prob about right.

yep I pull the bonnet to get the engine and tranny out.

Taking out the engine sounds like fun, and a month of Sundays.

With the tilt front, bonnet removal is a snap, as is engine removal after that! Should take 20 min to a half hour at most to pull the engine and tranny out!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I pulled the engine/tranny out with the bonnet on...was a real pain in the butt....took about 3 hours of careful maneuvering.

I wasn't to worried about scratching the underpart of the bonnet (beneath the grill) because the car will be painted now.

However when I put the engine back into the newly painted car --that bonnet's coming off!!
