It looks like my Wife & I will be driving
#2 Son's (Stephen) Saturn back to him in Florida sometime
in September, where we'll also visit with Son #1 (Jeff),
& his Wife,in Jacksonville,Florida.
I'll be able to retire in January '08,so we thought
as long as we're back there,we might want to look around,
with the possibility of moving there.
Could anyone tell me where the preferable places to
live would be.We're talking affordable housing (by Calif.
standards - actually less than that).

Thanks,

- Doug

Doug -

Little clarification here... Are you talking Tennessee or Florida? If Tennessee, what part are you interested in? Actually, there are three different Tennessees. We're in middle Tenn., just NW of Nashville. West Tennessee is very different, and East Tennessee has its own flavor. Housing in all three areas will be much more affordable than California.

The wife and I just bought some property on the edge of the Smokies in E. Tenn. for retirement, and are looking forward to getting over there. Clarksville, where we are now, is a great community - city of about 105,000, with a state university and an army base, so it's much more diverse than the rest of middle Tenn.

I'd be glad to share any insight with you - contact me offline any time.

Crossville, Tn was just listed in "Places to Retire" magazine as a great place - we know...Jerri's farm isn't far from there...look into it as you go through.

We're thinking Tennessee right now.
Don't know a lot about it,but it's on our
list of places to move to.California's getting
stranger by the year. Our house is worth $250K -
- I wouldn't pay that for it.We'd like to find something
under $150K.Again,just looking (& thinking).

For that price, you can buy a farm! Not Jerri's but lots more!!

Yep - but not in Nashville or Brentwood!

Lots of great places to settle - just depends on your interests.

American by birth, Southern by the grace of God. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
My wife and I have traveled a little, but we are always glad to get back home to the south. Things are soooooo much slower here than anywhere else.

If you want to experience an even slower pace of life... you should try Italy. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Lived there for nearly six months and heavily experienced 'la dolce far niente' (the sweetness of doing nothing). Very much an aspect of Italian living. Especially outside the big cities and in the small Tuscan hill cities like where I lived.

Welcome to the Land of Enchantment!!!

Hubby and I lived in Florida for about 15 years, equally split on the East Coast and the West Coast. Our living there was the result of husband's job. While it is easy to get around in during the 'non-snowbird season' from a traffic standpoint, that time is very hot. We got around this by doing all our errands before 10:00 AM. During the months of November through April, traffic was horrendous, we avoided restaurants and errands that took 15 minutes mushroomed into an hour because of traffic. We never drove to the beach which was only about 5-6 miles away. Lastly we never got friendly with any of the hurricanes and indeed went through several. Not something I want to do again.

We relocated to New Mexico - a small town between Albuquerque and Santa Fe because of husband's job. We built a log home and made sure that the front door was easy to access for the local funeral director as that is the only way either of us is leaving. While this might sound morbid, it certainly sums up our attitude. We are not ever moving again.

Real Estate, while climbing steadily in price, is still affordable and taxes and insurance are reasonable. I.E. - home valued about $600,000 - $700,000 means taxes outside of the metropolitan area of about $2,000 and insurance about the same. Certainly less expensive than Florida. All based on approximately 5,500 square feet under cover and about 4-5 acres of land.

The weather is great for the most part in spite of this winter which has been very unusual. We have four distinct seasons in our area. Added to this we get to drive our LBC's most of the year. High altitude and low humidity are our friends.

Again, Welcome to the Land of Enchantment.
