Temperature/Pressure Gauge

I thought I'd test the temperature gauge in my not quite yet running car. Common sense told me all I had to do was place the sensor in a container of very, very hot water. No reaction by the gauge needle. I did the same to a spare gauge from the attic (with a broken oil line at the back of the gauge) with the same results.

While I was in the mood I was curious about the oil pressure side. Please remember not a running engine to test on. I put some air into the line with no movement of the needle.

Bad gauges and move on or does my maybe not common sense not applying here?

Temp gauge should heat up in boiling water - not sure about the oil side

Are you are talking about the safety (oil/water) gauge? The mechanical temperature gauge should work when the expansion bulb is placed in boiling water. Likewise, the pressure portion of the gauge should move in response to applying compressed air to its port. Obviously if the expansion bulb has been cut off of either mechanical temperature gauge, the gauge will not work.

The gauges are still rebuildable cores. Please do not throw them out, sell them or pass them along.

The newer gauges don't light up the same as the old bulb by the side gauges. I'm sending my old ones to be rebuilt from now on. Cost about the same.

Kurt.

Lots of shops do the rebuilds if you look around. Nisonger is probably the best known.

after storing mine for nine years during the restoration, the temp gauge didn't work when installed for the first couple of hours it was in. then it started working on it's own. maybe the needle got stuck in one place from sitting so long. anyway, you may still have hope:friendly_wink:.
