Temp sender thread

I'm changing the location of my temp sender from the radiator header tank to the head. I need to know the thread size of the threaded bung located on the outside bottom of the radiator header in order to block it off. That bung has threads on the outside (male?) Looks to be about 3/4" but It's not in a position to measure easily. This is on an early BN6 Thanks, Bob

Hi Skip, Bob;s problem for what ever reason is the temp sensor is presently located in the bottom of the top header tank. He wants to move the sensor to the block location.Consequently, when he removes it from the radiator it leaves an open threaded "Bung" there which he needs to close off. Bob I think the thread has been identified in the archives of the forum take a look see. I am sorry I do not know what thread is used.---Fwiw---Keoke

Sorry thats what I was getting at if the sender is in the tank take the plug from the head and put it in the tank and screw the sender in the head unless a bushing or something has been used. There must be a plug in the head now so just swap em.

Female threaded hole in the head and Male threaded "stub" on the tank.

Might be able to source a "cap" to seal off the radiator from one of the parts houses.

Which also raises the point: you can't use the same sender in both locations...

If thats the correct place why move it? I`m all confused now. But that ain`t nothing new either. Skip /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif

Hi Bob,
Randy raises a good point. Putting a female nut on the temp sensor isn’t a “do at home” project. I think you’d have to send it to a gauge specialist to have it changed. You probably would find all the parts from them. Nisonger and Mo-Ma are 2 companies that most people seem happy with.

Hi Skip,
I got it wrong. (don’t tell anyone I get males and females mixed up) Bob originally said he had a male thread on his radiator, but the head should be female. So the sender still needs a gender change, just opposite of what I said. What did I just say? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

My mistake too I didn`t see the part of his post that said it was a male fitting on the tank. So you are right the sender needs changing or he needs a short nipple in the head. Skip

Let me clarify the situation. The original sensor/ gauge that goes in the underside of the radiator tank is kaput. the sensor has a nut fitting. I have another temp sensor/ gauge that works. It is designed to screw into a threaded hole (like on the head). As of right now the hole in the head is filled with a bolt to keep the coolant from running out. I suppose I could have the original gauge fixed but why bother since I already have one that is functional? Bob

Take the bad one to the hardware store and get a cap that matches the threads and cap the tank nipple and use the good gauge in the blockand get rid of the bolt. Skip

Back to square one- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Hi Bob, What you might try is to get an expansion plug that will fit the radiator bung until you find a cap that fits the thread. If the bung hole is too small for the conventional expansion type plug. Get a "WELL NUT" they are available at most hardware and boat supply places and plug the bung's hole. The rest is gravey.---Keoke

Hi Bob,
I would venture a guess that the thread is British pipe thread and you might not find a match at the local plumbing store. Maybe give Michael @ British Car Specialist a call. They re-core Healey radiators so that part is probably familiar to them. Lower on the list of options would be to cut the bad gauge off and solder a disc into the fitting to make it a plug. Just some thoughts.

Greg has a good idea if you aren`t going to repair the gauge just cut the nut off and take the nut to a radiator shop and solder the hole shut. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif

Yes Greg, thats a good solution and you can do it in the garage. That triggered another thought .When the thermostat sensor was moved from the radiator to the engine block, the radiators were provided with a cap that threads on to the bung.Consequently, caps must be available from some suspect.---Keoke

Greg: do you have an email address or phone number for brit car spec? Thanks, Bob
