Temp Problem

Everything has been going great with the GT. Last week as I drove home the temp guage went to the middle (like normal) and stayed until about half way home. Then it went half way between the middle and upper hot mark. I have removed the thermostat to see if the temp stays low. Same thing for the rest of the week. No water loss and no hot smell. I'm thinking temp sending unit maybe.

Easy way to tell....stick a thermostat in the radiator after driving it & compare that reading to your guage.

Be careful opening the cap though... I spent 3 weeks with green, glycol smelling, peeling blisters (and probably absorbed more into my system than anyone should) after opening one up hot.

The guage is 3/4 of the way to the "hot" side and the thermometer reads 200. So I'm assuming there is something wrong. This is with no thermostat and water filled up. The car did not put out water until I stopped. I now think maybe the water pump is not functioning properly. The car was running at the N mark; then would go up to 3/4 mark and today it went to the bottom of the H mark. This has happened over a period of time like sometning was going bad. Again Water Pump??

PS it is too beautiful here not to have the GTR running. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

It will run hot for sure without a thermostat or a sleave in there.

Also needs some coolent with that water to be most effective.

The heat problem started before I took out the thermostat. I took it out to see if it was stuck closed.

I've run mine without a thermostat for 2 years... (actually only figured out there wasn't one in there a few months ago) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Mine will only start registering on the temp gauge if I'm sitting still for a few minutes in hot weather.

Then it's running way too cool. An engine that's too cool will wear out much faster. 200ishÂşF is a good temp -- get yourself a 195ÂşF thermostat. Both Peter Burgess (in "How to Power Tune MGB 4-Cylinder Engines") and Smokey Yunick (In "Power Secrets") recommend 190-195Âş tstats....

Your engine will last longer, make more power, and use less fuel.

HTH!
