Temp/Oil Gauge - Any Experience with Moss Part ???

Hi Gang:

I am restoring a BJ8 wood dash and broke the temp bulb filament on my original Oil Temp Gauge while removing.

I have been quoted $135US for a repair, but the overall gauge's external/face appearance is a B- at best, making me question replacement rather than restoration.

I just noted that Moss advertises a genuine Smith's replacment temp/oil gauge as an upgrade of the obsolete original? Part 361-761 at $152.95 list. Seems like a good value and small picture in there cat. seems to indicate that it looks as original.

Has anyone had experience with this part? Is the quality and appearance to original specs?

Andrew

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif Hi Andrew1, Nisongner will rebuild the instrument and it will look better than new and is "OEM"---Fwiw--Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Andrew,
MOMA in Albuquerque, NM completely reguilds all kinds of gauges for about $95 each. I have had them do all the gauges in 4 cars and have had nothing but good luck with them. Have a good day!

Re: Temp/Oil Guage - Any Experience with Moss Part ???

I just got my combo guage back from Nisonger, it is a beauty. Only thing is - I can't find a hole in firewall to pass capillary through (oil tube hole and grommet are in place, capillary was clipped at guage and engine when I got the car). Where does it go through and how does it run across engine compartment? Any links to an engine compartment photo? (I'm a visual learner). Thanks.

Re: Temp/Oil Guage - Any Experience with Moss Part ???

I beleive that on my BJ8 it piggy backs the hole for the heater water return but I'm not near the car to say positively. It then makes a few loops and clips along the copper pipe to the front of the block.

Re: Temp/Oil Guage - Any Experience with Moss Part ???

Hi John, Right in the middle of the firewall just to the right of the left hand heater hose should be a large hole or a large empty grommet. That is the pass through to the engine compartment.Along side the copper heater pipe "Supports" are two small clips. The capillary tube clips in these clips located at the front and rear of the engine block and the sensor is now in a position to be fitted to the block. Excess cable is coiled up and secured with a spot tie at the interface of the copper and rubber heater hose at the rear of the engine.---Fwiw--Keoke-?

Re: Temp/Oil Guage - Any Experience with Moss Part ???

Bingo. Heater hose had been rerouted directly to cooper tube to keep heat out of cockpit and the pass through was blanked off. Thanks guys
