Teen drivers

Due to the increase in teen driving accidents, and the doubling of teen driver deaths so far this year, the Connecticut legislature and governor decided to take action.

Formed advisory committees around the state, got input from university studies, parents, teens, schools, etc.

Found the major cause of teen driver accidents is showing off and not paying attention when there are other teens in the car. If new teen drivers only drive alone or with adults, they have a greatly reduced likelihood of having an accident.

So today the governor signs the legislature's new Teen Driving bill:

- 11 pm curfew on teen drivers

- more behind-the-wheel training before license.

- parents required to attend two hours of a driving education class with their teen.

The law goes into effect August 1st.

Anybody notice something missing from the law?

T.

Doh! Could they have totally missed the main cause of teen accidents? The legislators should all be made to ride around with a car-load of teenagers!! :devilgrin:

That'll be a tough one.

That 11pm curfew sounds good, but those that are going to kill themselves- and others - probably won't listen to that part. Probably easier to enforce;
"Two or more teens in the car -> At least one adult (28 or more)"

There is still the same problem over here, but not so wide spread. A lesser car culture, more acceptance of kids at bars and dance halls, wide spread use of night taxis for partying kids, night buses,
Oh and the clincher, about $3200. minimum for a drivers license.

Ummmmmmmmmmm Get caught talking on a cell phone while driving, you get your D.L. suspended until you are 50?
{hopefuly, by the time you are 50 you`ll know better.}

Get caught driving on the influence of booze or drugs, you get your D.L. suspended for LIFE!
OOOOOPS I forgot .... ALCOHOL IS A DRUG!

Should apply to ANYONE tho .... not just teens!

In our State the teens cannot drive at all without an adult in the car. The are issued only a learning permit. They must log 80(?) hours of driving with an adult. An adult must sign each log entry. Other teens may be in the car, but the adult must sit in front with the driver.

I use that as an chance to teach my neices and nephews how to drive a manual trans. They are happy to do it because they love having their friends see them driving a Jag with the top down.

I've noticed an improvement in the driving of most local teens.

Still, there those that think they are immortal and drive that way. I think its their ME attitute that will not improve with age.

In WA, no kids in cars with them for 6 months. should change the driving age to 18 and the permit age to 17 with a year under their belt before getting a license . Actually the # of kids putting off driving is actually increasing.
