Technical Question - Steering Lock-to-Lock

I know the early MGB's had 2.9 turns lock-to-lock & the later rubber ones had 3.5 turns

...but, somewhere in the recesses of my mind I think I've heard that there was a short time when getting a steering rack with 2.4 turns was possible....I've got to of the early racks laying on the floor of my garage....one is 2.9 (just turned it & counted) but the other appears to be less...they both have all the same numbers except 1 place on the housing there are stmped numbers that are different (this is the only rack with the different numbers)

...here's my dumb, technical question: how can I tell if I've got a rack with shorter turning radius?

Tony,
try measuring the distance the the tie rod moves with one revolution of the wheel, the more it travels , the quicker the rack.

mark

Did that, Mark, & it appears it moves farther on one than the other...

Tony

I could be wrong on this but if you have them check the special tuning handbook I'm pretty sure that BMC did a lower geared rack as part of it's tuning kits.

regards

DUH!! Thanks, Tom...I've got one of the handbooks out in the garage - didn't even think about it....

So, I went out to the garage & made a little measuring wheel I could slide over the steering rack to measure lock-to-lock turns...they're all either 2.9 or 3.5

Doc, would you measure the one I sent you, please?

they're that many turns? I'd swear the one in my '76 is less turns than that... I'd reckon the one in my car to be 2.66 turns...

As soon as BOB makes it 'round to this side I'll report back.

MMC: 2.9-ish here, stop-to-stop. Same for the one I removed.

You DID mean a lower gear ratio lock-to-lock here, I'll assume /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
