Teak Steering Wheel

Has anyone heard of replacing the rim of a TR3 steering wheel with teak? The center is metal, so is easily restored, but my rim is cracked plastic. I will be replacing the rim with teak, but don't want to re-invent the wheel if someone has already done it and may have some tips.

Thanks,

John

There is someone who reworks the stock wheel with wood -- a search may turn up some photos of his work. I think he does this as a profitable sideline so there may not be any tips but photos may give you ideas or at least encouragement.

There is (or was) a member on this board named GB Lawson (no relation to me). He is a Canadian who rebuilds classic wooden wheels for British cars. You may want to send him a PM through this board to see what advice he can offer.

Did you have plans to do this yourself? If so, may I ask what you were thinking? I have thought the same thing would be pretty cool. I like the banjo spokes on our cars more than aftermarket rims, but do like the wooden rim.

Thanks,

Eric

Lots of work, even for the experienced wood worker, but very rewarding. Almost any wood can be used, including exotic ones.

Here are a few photos of other hand made wood rim wheels. Guys that do this charge approx. $500 or more per wheel. Have you considered an aftermarket wheel, e.g., Momo, Nardi, etc.

Thanks!

The pics are about what I was expecting, except I plan to use a miter saw to keep the grain pattern consistent over equal segments around the wheel. I did glance at aftermarket options, but for the price, I think I will enjoy the project.

I'll let you guys know when I get started....

John
