Teaching

Let’s be clear though in every example the problem is not the kids.

True, but you have to remember that while we want the best teachers we can get, even a mediocre teacher can get the basics across IF the student wants to learn. Unfortunately, too many of today's students think that just showing up is enough. I teach in a Title 1 school, and too many of my students don't realize the importance of education. They come to class, have earbuds in (even though this is against school policy, here I blame the administrators for not enforcing the policy) and pay no attention to the material.

I had one student ask me why I gave him an F. Told him had no choice, F was as low as I could go. Showed him some of his work, 12%,15%, a blank paper wth only his name on it, and that was misspelled.

Maynard, you had that kid too?

And his brother who was so dumb he couldn't even pass gas.

Tom, I have that printed off and hanging in my room.

I was at a restaurant talking racing with my brother-in-law about, if it is time you cannot compete you can always teach. Some "gentleman" started a rant on how he had been teaching for 40 yrs. and was proud of his accomplishments and that it was ludicrous that I had said if you can't do it anymore teach. He had all these degrees and was insulted. My brother-in-law was speechless. I just looked at the man and asked, " Have you ever driven or raced a race car?" The man turned red and his wife pulled his sleeve and snickered as she told him, " Wasn't your conversation dear! You see older race car drivers teach handling when they decide they can't do it anymore, just like the Racers on TV!" I like her!
