T-Series TD/TF Steering Free Play Question

My recently acquired 54 TF has a little free play in the steering. The steering wheel rotates about a half inch before any actual movement of the wheels. Is this normal? If not can it be adjusted or do I need to replace the rack? Thanks.

Not normal. My 55 TF has zero play, none whatsoever and it has the original steering rack! (y)

Paul161 - Thanks for your response. I guess I will order the replacement steering rack from Moss and have a good winter project on my hands.

I am operating on the assemption that the TD/TF steering is basically similar to the later MG cars - before replacing the rack I'd look at the tie rod ends and pivot bushings. If they are worn you could get the same effect because the rack is moving up the wheels won't turn until the slack in those worn ends gets taken up (been there/done that). Tie rod ends are usually easier and cheaper than a whole rack.

Look to the rack mounts in addition to the joints and such. With the car on pavement have someone move the wheel as you observe the rack itself, if it "sways" back and forth, you've found some of the issue. Maybe not all, but worth a try before replacing everything.

Another place that may cause this problem is connect of the steering column to the rack. There are rubber bushing they may have perished resulting in excessive play at the joint. Addition one or two of the three bolts may come loose or fallen out. I had this problem once.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I have removed the rack and found the steering input shaft bushing is very worn so that the shafts able to wobble significantly. Have all the new parts and getting ready to reinstall the rack. Was quite difficult to remove, hopefully will be able to put the new rack in without having to remove the radiator and other bits.
