T-Series TC oil pan

I finally got the chance to get some TC work done. The motor was rebuilt before the car went into storage by the P.O. I already had it out of the car so now I pulled off the timing cover, inspection plates, rocker cover ect. I also pulled the oil pan, looking inside I see one tube coming from the block into the front of the pan, I assume this is the pickup line. The thing thats got me stumped is this cylindrical shaped black thing sitting in the middle of the pan with a hose attached to it, the hose just seams to run to the side of the pan where it stops. Any idea what this thing is for?

R6 - The cylindrical shapped black thing sitting in the middle of of the sump (oil pan) is the oil pickup and filter screen. It is attached to the side of the sump, which has a holedrilled through (there is a plug on the outside) and an intersecting hole drilled down from the flange. there is a corresponding hole in the wall of the block that goes to the oil pump. I suspect that the tube you see coming from the "from" the front of the engine is actually at the back of the engine and it comes from the rear main bearing cap. the tube connects to the oil return channel in the rear main bearing cap. The oil channel catches the oil that is thrown off the oil slinger machined into the carnkshaft to keep it from being pumped out of the rear main "seal", which is not really a seal. The rear main seal is the same arrangement as on your MGA, an oil slinger and a reverse threaded scroll that rides in a closely spaced opening at the rear of the engine. If it is set up correctly when the engine is reassembled and if the gaskets are assembled correctly when the sump is reinstalled, it actually works fairly well. The tube drains the channel in the rear main bearing cap down into the sump. I'm not sure about the MGA, but on the early 3 main bearing MGB engines, the tube was not used and some people think that the tube being in the XPAG engines used in the T series cars actually causes problems with the rear main seal leaking. That's really up for grabs as our TD has the tube in place and doesn't leak excessively from the rear main seal.

Since you have taken the sump off, you will need to reassemble it and the gaskets associated with it. if you will e-mail me, I'll send you an article detailing how to accomplish that such that it will be leak free.
Cheers,

Dave, thank you very much for your help.
