Tappet Inspection

In the process of putting the head back together, hadn't torqued anything down at this point, and was sliding the push-rods (in the same order) back in their homes.
3 of the 8 didn't want to go back in, I feel considerable resistance about an inch from where they should be.
I turned the engine by hand, and the resistance remains.
I do have the tappet covers, but have never opened them up, besides, my 1275 doesn't have them.
It's somewhat a done deal that I'm going to have to get in there, just want to get some thoughts about the following...

Is it possible for a tappet (or three) to list?
Could the resistance/blockage be a sign of something more sinister?
Will opening the tappet cover give me enough access to correct a tappet gone wild?
Many thanks as always.

I have seen them come out of the bore, when they were stuck to the bottom of a cam, but that was with a new engine. You should be able to get them back into the bore if they came out after removing the side covers.

Hopefully there is nothing more sinister going in on there, but there is only one way to find out. About the only thing I could figure that may have gone awry is there is some crud in the lifter area.

Keep us in the loop, I'm curious how this will turn out.

Pull the covers, check what's goin on. The tappets can stick to the rods on removal and be pulled from their bores. Tappets are another bit wot should go back in the respective bore they came from, BTW. If more'n a couple are 'free-ranging' in there all you can do is take an educated guess...

I had a rocker pop off the push rod and was concerned. Everyone here instructed me on what to but when I went to do it, I lifted a pushrod and via suction, it pulled out a lifter. Oh boy I thought. Removed the side cover and there it was. Should be an easy one.

Yep, take a look in the lifter cover as what Vince shows can and does happen as you see. On your 1275 motor as long as the cam is left in place the lifter is trapped and has no where to go, so it's not a issue on that engine.

Thanks guys!
That ~looks~ like what I'm feeling. I'll get the header out of the way (again) and get in there.
I know what you mean by that "oh boy" Vince, ~That didn't sound right~.
