I haven't done that much wrenching in my 33 years, but it's mostly been during the last 10 or so years that I've had to learn to fix my cars... can't afford a car with a warranty, and I can't afford to pay anyone to fix them for me. But I like to learn new things (even if it's just something odd about a new-to-me old car I've bought). I like to experiment with different things (gonna try an HS6 on my MGB soon instead of the ZS to see if I can squeeze a bit of extra MPG from it). I'll buy something even if I don't have the money "right now" to fix it right... I'll have money for it down the road (like my Alfa). In the meantime, I can keep it from rusting into the earth, and let it run for a little bit once a week to keep the engine from rotting away. Those are free (pretty much) and easy things to do. I'm still reading about it (the alfa) and learning more about it every day, and when a little "extra money" comes my way, I'll buy parts, and I'll do the work to fix what's wrong.
I've HAD TO fix my wife's Eagle Talon several times...
and pretty much rebuild my 4Runner's engine in-situ...
But I've ENJOYED fixing my MGB's brake system, fuel system,
and learning about my MGB and my Alfa (which I have yet to really wrench on - but will gladly!)
Big difference between the HAD TO, and ENJOYED parts... Maybe it's the cars, maybe it's the learning....
I dunno. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
