Takata Airbag recall

guess it only works in the US

See!? Proof Canada isn't a US territory.

Just had the airbag replaced on my Chrysler 300 SRT8 last week. Took about 6 months for the bag to come in after the original recall notice. Ironic that something that's supposed to help you be safe could kill you. It doesn't seem like there's any procedure in place so that your bag could be deactivated or removed while you wait for the new one to come in. When I saw the news the other night about the expanded recall, the car they showed was a silver Chrysler 300, same color as mine.

Thanks for the link. My car is affected; although I am told recalls will not start until they get sufficient stock of inflators. Replacements will begin in "high absolute humidity" regions.

Has anyone had a recall completed yet? How "deep" is the surgery? I have removed/reinstalled the airbag from my steering wheel, it is a self-contained unit that is easy to get to. (I did this while replacing steering wheel trim that was falling apart.) But my car, like most, has a few more airbags in the a-pillars, b-pillars, behind the passenger side dashboard, etc.

Thanks HealeyRick - we posted at the same time. Was the repair done to your satisfaction? (Given that modern cars are "snapped" together instead of screwed, sometimes when trim is removed and replaced, it isn't quite as clean as original.)

Interesting problem with airbags. They are designed to catch an unbelted 50th percentile male at 30 mph. (Note, unbelted, when every state law has seatbelt laws.) So the airbag needs to be very powerful. I am not defending Takata in any way, but I do believe they have a tough job to do. Note, I do not intend to make this a political discussion - I hope, I really really really hope, that I have not crossed the boundary here. If so, I apologize and support removing my posting.

Mike,

The only bag that was replaced was the steering wheel one. I haven't seen anything that the other ones in the car are subject to a recall. Car was in the shop for a day and I had a bunch of other stuff done as well including four wheel rotor and pad replacement. The work was well done, although I think the steering wheel orientation might be a couple of degrees off. The financial aspects of this recall are stunning. Interesting part is that the automakers are on the hook for this and not Takata directly (although the automakers could go after Takata). The future of Takata is in doubt: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/05/business/international/takata-airbag-recall.html And, of course, the automakers will be liable for any deaths or injuries caused by the faulty bags before replacements can be fitted.

They said on the new last night that if the cost doesn't drive Takata out of business that at the current rate of replacement it'll take 10 years or more to complete the recall.

We've had 2 airbag recalls on the same (2004 Honda) car. On the first recall they evidently replaced the original bag with a Takata bag. We got a recall notice about 6 weeks ago & the bag was replaced one day later. Took about 45 minutes (passenger side) and no external evidence of a change. That makes a total of about 15 recalls for 2 cars bought new in '04 and '05. We've kept up with all of them & all were done quickly (except the Toyota truck frame replacement(!))
