'Tain't funny, McGee!

It's not the internal combustion engine... it's the fuel.
We all know that the internal combustion engine can be made to run on compressed air. My point is that we need an alternative fuel supply, and not 'dump the baby out with the bath water'... the internal combustion engine is not to blame.

Hope you have an enjoyable weekend Basil.... sounds like it's been a tough week for you.

Hey, unless you are Princess Diana, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
(hope I at least got you to smile  )

OOOhh, that is right up there with, "what do the NASA letters stand for".

Yeah, we are getting 5 and 10 cent overnight increases around here. Unfortunately for me (and the product of poor planning on my part), both of my normal driver cars use premium fuel. I paid $4.09 yesterday, but most stations are $4.25 and up. My normal daily, the Audi, returns 25-27 MPG in normal commuting. However, a shift linkage bushing broke on Sunday, and the part has to come from Germany. That leaves the less frugal XJ40. Ouch. I like the Audi for a lot of reasons, among them is the fact that for a "big" car, it gets great milage. But, at 24 yrs old, it sometimes quarters and half dollars me to death. I was thinking about getting a cheap beater just before the price spike, but it is too late now. All the frugal cars are going up in price. I have written to my Con-Gress critters about the lack of a plan here, time and time again. They seem to think that Unicorn poop, rainbows, and glitter are going to solve all of our energy problems. They cannot (or will not more likely) grasp the fact that OIL is the fuel for here and now. It would be GREAT if alternative energy gets developed to the point that it is a workable substituite, but I need to drive to work TODAY, and heat my shop today..... The other thing I wonder about is this. The Germans were using synthetic gasoline in WW2, including as avgas. Since the laws of physics remain constant, the fuel must have been of a workable quality (decent octane numbers, etc) How come that technology is not being pursued anyplace?? I have never heard about any experimentation with synthetic gas....

I like old airplanes...

May be getting political here but, OPEC is on record as supporting $50 barrel oil. I heard an expert recently say that he reckoned oil should be worth $5 a barrel. From where I sit seems to have a lot more to do with traders who are all getting a piece of it because of "the market." seems to me like "the market" might be a tad broken.

It is broken,JP. How is it that traders can get people to buy something that hasn't been processed? Nor do they have it on hand!

On a brighter note, one day it may be cheaper to use whisky in your car. :jester:(Heaven forfend!)

Stuart.

$4.39 a gallon for regular here....& I'll have to fill
up the panel truck pretty soon.

I may need to get th' ol' Raleigh off th' hooks, change out th' tires 'n tubes!

Where do ya find parts for ancient Raleighs these days?? I have 2 that need tyres and tubes, and perhaps most importantly, fresh brake pads. The '51 pads are like rocks, and produce exactly 0 friction of any sort when pressed against the rims... Local bike shops cater to "Bike Fairys" with expensive road bikes, or off road stuff. Old bikes are so last century ya know...

I know a guy who knows a guy.... :jester:

I just finished restoring a fine old S.R. twelve speed road bike from the seventies that I found stuffed in a crawl space under a house I was repairing... Just in time. elrey

Mine's an old Super-Course II... still... would get me where I'd need to be.

Just gotta depend on chinois tyres. Not so reassuring, that.
