The black goes on the terminal at the base of the bulb holder. Are the red wire and the striped wire specific to either opposed terminal or are they interchangeable?

Not completely sure about the 100 but on a 3000, if the wires get crossed i.e. put on a different way between the front and the rear lights then the indicator lights will act up, they tend to blip faster from memory, and they do not glow so brightly. They are at least side specific, so if the left side is fine and the wiring is mixed up only on the right side then only the right side will be affected. Does that help.

100-4. Yes. That helps, I think. Can I go by the depth of the bulb pins into the socket in order to orient the wires? Why wouldn't the manufacturer stamp each in order to take the mystery out of it? (Another 'why wouldn't' question, don't 'ya hate 'em?)

Try checking a bulb against a battery and then determine which of the end points lights up which filament, with a 6/21 there must be a difference in illumination.
